What is Snapchat?
Snapchat is a mobile app that allows users to send and share a photo or video with their friends. Where it differs from other mobile applications is the photo or video is then erased right away after being viewed. Evan Spiegal, co-founder, and CEO of Snapchat states that they now have more than 100 million individuals who use the app every day, and 2 billion photos and videos are exchanged each day, with 60 percent of users creating new content on a daily basis.
What Are Geofilters?
Geofilters are digital graphics which can be overlaid on a photo or video, similar to digital stickers, but built within the mobile app itself. In numerous situations, a geofilter is known to be as a graphic of a local landmark or location, yet the company is now expanding the options. Custom Geofilters can now be created and be used for weddings, parties, businesses and more, and are available for a limited period in a particular geographic area such as the building where an event is occurring. Geofilters are designed to communicate the message of the event to the viewer visually and can be found when the user scrolls through their filter options.
I provide custom Snapchat geofilters for events such as birthdays, weddings, baby showers, corporate events, DJ events, nightclubs, and much more. I work with clients to find the ideal design for their function and handle the entire process, including submitting the geofilter to Snapchat. Also, I provide analytic data on request 24-72 hours later after the filter campaign is complete so users can see how many individuals accessed the filter and how far the reach extended.
Business And Geofilter Snapchats
Every event filter is uniquely designed to show the purpose and personality, of the event yet remains aesthetically pleasing. Companies find these filters are perfect for product launches, restaurants, inductions, charity events, seminars, awards ceremonies, fundraisers, and much more. Geofilters created for businesses are very beneficial in the sense that it’s an added advantage that they spread their message beyond those attending their event or business. This allows users to learn more about the event and share this information with their friends on mobile app when they distribute their photos and videos.
What is the difference between a personal and business geofilter?
A personal geofilter doesn’t include any branding, business names, or logos, whereas a business geofilter promotes a brand or business.
The Benefits For Businesses
Businesses continuously need to find new ways to engage consumers, and Snapchat is a great way to do so. According to Snapchat, 37 percent of individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 are currently using the app, with 23 percent of individuals between the ages of 13 and 17 taking advantage of the app, with 26 percent of those between the ages of 25 and 34 also using the app. When Snapchatters are exposed to an ad on the app, they are more likely to engage in the desired behavior. For example, when a snap chatter watches an ad for a movie, they are three times more likely to actually go see the movie. In addition, viewers are nine times more likely to view a vertical mobile video than a horizontal one, according to the company responsible for the app, and the video or photo is always shown full screen.
Now imagine increasing brand exposure by allowing businesses to use a custom-created geofilter. The filter may have the brand name or the brand logo, or it may deliver a short message the company wishes to get across. For example, most individuals are familiar with the Nike slogan, “Just Do It.” This slogan could be used by Nike at a marathon or other sporting event, and users could send photos to friends and family that show the slogan on their picture. Imagine the reach this would have when the photo is shared. Although Nike is a well-known company, smaller brands can easily do the same, sharing their logo with a bigger audience through the use of these custom filters.
Designing Your Geofilter
The first step of the process is to design the geofilter. It needs to reflect the event in every way; therefore I work with clients to ensure I meet their goals regarding the artwork and the message to be shared. Customers will need to share details such as the design concept that they have in mind and information that will be on the filter for me to get started. Nobody knows an event better than the person planning it; so this is one area where clients need to be involved. I make certain this part of the process is as easy as possible.
Map The Custom Geofilter
What makes these geofilters so unique is they are limited to specific geographical regions such as a building address. A geofilter will not be visible to the user unless they are within the geofilter’s geofence. Clients will need to provide information about where they want users to be able to make use of their custom geofilter. With this information, a geofence of the geofilter will then be set. This only allows people in the specified area to access the custom geofilter.
Which countries are custom geofilters available in?
Unfortunately, Snapchat has not rolled out this technology worldwide yet so I can only provide geofilters for the following countries: United Kingdom, United States, United Arab Emirates, Sauda Arabia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil.
It will not be long until Snapchat adds more countries to this list.
Custom Geofilter Submission
The custom geofilter must be submitted to Snapchat to be approved before the process can move forward. I will handle this process of design and ensure that there are no problems before it leaves my office. The customer can opt to be responsible for submitting the design to Snapchat. Once the submission process is complete, the filter will be up and running at the desired time and in the location you want. It is that easy.
Using The Geofilter
Location services permit users to access the geofilters, but Snapchat does not store the location data at any time. Access location services by adjusting settings on the phone being used. Once Snapchat location services are enabled, open the app and click on the settings cog, which may be found in the upper right corner. Select Manage and turn on Filters. Doing so enables any geofilters active in the area. Make sure to swipe right to see all of the geofilter options for the current location, as the custom filter will be offered in this area. It will be easily identifiable by participants, so this is never a concern.
Custom Geofilter Pricing

In contrast, the one-month version is available for 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the entire month. Some restrictions may apply, and more coverage is available if needed.
